MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING
FEBRUARY 12, 2000

1. FINANCIAL REPORT FROM THE TREASURER
Keumsoon Hahn, the treasurer reported on the deposits and
expenses during 1999, and distributed the financial statement
to the members. The balance of the KALA's budget as of January
31, 2000 is $2311.43.
2. COLLECTION OF MEMBERSHIP DUES
Membership dues of $30.00 was collected from the members.
Members who did not bring the dues will send the dues to Keumsook
Hahn. Notice of membership dues will be sent to all KALA members.
3. YEAR 2000 PROJECTS
a) WORKSHOP ON "HOW TO BECOME A LIBRARIAN IN THE U.S."
KALA will hold a workshop on "How to become a librarian
in the U.S." on April 15, 2000. Place will be chosen from
one of the Los Angeles Public libraries located near Koreatown.
Graduate advisers from the Dept. of Information Studies of
Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, UCLA
and School of Library and Information Science, San Jose State
University at California State University at Fullerton campus
will be invited to talk about the schools and faculty, programs,
and admission process including the requirements and deadlines.
Application forms, school brochures and handouts will be distributed.
In addition to the graduate advisers, one faculty member from
each school will be invited to talk about the courses offered
and their experiences of teaching. As the faculty members, Dr.
Ed Pai will be contacted from the San Jose State University,
and Dr. Clara Chu from UCLA.
There will be presentations from the KALA members who are
working in different fields of librarianship: academic, public
and school. Tentative presenters are: Joy Kim, curator of Korean
Heritage Library, USC representing academic librarianship, Young
Sil Lee, senior librarian of Brentwood Public Library representing
public librarianship, and Diane Kim, representing school librarianship.
Workshop committee was formed with Heawon Paick as the chair,
and Mikyung Kang and Unjoo Lee as the committee members. The
committee will finalize all the details such as finding the proper
location, making public announcements through various news channels,
preparing the handouts, etc.
b) REVISION OF THE DIRECTORY OF KOREAN COLLECTIONS IN THE
GREATER LOS ANGELES
The directory published in 1994 has been widely used by many
librarians in southern California. It needs to be revised to
reflect the changes and new information, and a survey form will
be sent to each library listed in the directory. Choonhee Rhim
will prepare the survey form, and Nancy Choi will collect the
information and compile the directory. The tentative deadline
to collect the information is March 15, 2000.
4. KALA SCHOLARSHIP
KALA is going to resume awarding the scholarship to a Korean-American
library school student. The amount will be $500.00. Choonhee
Rhim will contact the library schools to make the announcements.
5. KALA NEWSLETTER
Unjoo Lee is the editor for the KALA newsletter, and is waiting
for the news items. Anybody who has the news items is encouraged
to send them to her.
6. PRESENTATION FROM ALADDIN US
There were two representatives, Paul Lee and Peter Yun from
Aladdin US, an online Korean book dealer in the US. It is the
subsidiary of the parent company, Aladdin Korea, online bookstore
in Korea. With its large database of Korean titles, the Korean
books are sold with discount prices and prompt delivery in the
US.
