Agenda items discussed:
1. Welcome New Members
Choonhee Rhim welcomed the new members:
Taeok Shin , new librarian at the Korean Cultural Center Library
and Sanghee Oh, a first year student at UCLA Graduate School
of Information Studies.
2. KALIPA Scholarship
KALIPA will award one scholarship of $500.00
Application deadline: November 30, 2002
Notification of award: February 15, 2003
The scholarship will be awarded to a student of Korean heritage
who is enrolled in a ALA-accredited library and information science
program.
3. Report on UCLA Master of Library and Information Science
program convocation on September 25, 2002
Pursuant to the request of Susan Abler, assistant director
of student services of UCLA GSEIS (Graduate School of Education
and Information Studies), the KALIPA had an information table
for the orientation program. Chungsil Kim, current student at
the program and Eun Gyong Park were the representatives of KALIPA.
4. Author Invitation
Discussed how to prepare for the lecture and book-signing
event of Linda Sue Park, a Korean-American and the Newbery award
winner. The KALIPA will invite Linda Sue Park and have a lecture
and book-signing event at the Central Library of the Los Angeles
Public Library and Pio Pico Koreatown Public Library for the
children's librarians and the Korean community. This event is
scheduled on March 12, 2003 to introduce the KALIPA and Linda
Sue Park to the Korean and library community. It was also suggested
to invite Metropolitan Cooperative Library System (MCLS) librarians
to the event as well.
It was recommended that book selling after the lecture is
handled by the FOCAL (Friends of Children and Literature) of
the Los Angeles Public Library.
The estimated expense is $1,500, and three possible funding
sources are considered; KALIPA, Korean Cultural Center in Los
Angeles, and Pio Pico Koreatown Public Library Friends Group.
Linda Sue Park invitation committee was formed. The members
of the committee are:

5. Discussion to help Korean-American library patrons
As a Fall of 2003 project, the KALIPA is going to organize
a workshop or publish a public library users guide booklet
containing basic information on how to use the public libraries
in the U.S. This is to help Korean American patrons who are
not familiar with the public library systems.
6. Korean Librarianship Outside of Korea : a practical guide
and manual
This manual is edited by Joy Kim, and published by Asian Culture
Press for the Committee on Korean Materials of Council on East
Asian Libraries, Association for Asian Studies. A copy of this
manual was distributed to the members.
