Founded on Sept. 30, 1983 as Korean American Librarians Association (KALA)

Name changed on Sept. 30, 2000 to Korean American Librarians and Information Professionals Association (KALIPA)

Vision:

  • 1. To exchange professional knowledge among Korean American librarians and information professionals
  • 2. To cooperate with other library organizations that share similar concerns and
    interests
  • 3. To promote library and information services for Korean communities
  • 4. To promote cooperative library programs between the United States and Korea

Highlights of past activities:

  • April 28, 1984 Seminar: "How To Use Libraries In the U.S."
  • Nov. 15, 1984 Sponsorship of a reading contest for Korean-Americans
  • April 20, 1985 Seminar: "The Invention of Korean Typography and Its Spread To the West"
  • Nov. 17, 1986 Sponsorship of a dinner program for California Library Association participants, "Experience the Korean Cuisine"
  • June 30, 1987 First KALA national meeting at ALA conference in San Francisco
  • Nov. 17, 1990 Workshop: "How To Manage a Church Library"
  • June 27, 1997 Participation in pre-conference program at ALA conference in San Francisco: "U.S.-Korean Librarianship Moving Towards the 21st Century"
  • Sept. 7, 1999 KALA website created
  • April 15, 2000 Workshop: "How To Become a Librarian In the U.S."

  • May 10, 1994 First edition of Directory of Korean Language Collections in the Greater Los Angeles Area
