The 3rd edition of the Korean American Librarians Association
Member Directory was published in June, 1997 and distributed
in November, 1997. Nine-three Korean American librarians'
names are listed with their addresses and phone numbers.

"U.S. - Korean
Librarianship Moving Towards the 21st Century" Conference
in San Francisco
The conference was held at the International House of University
of California, Berkeley on June 27, 1997 as one of the pre-conference
programs of the American Library Association's Annual Conference.
It was organized and sponsored by the East Asia and the Pacific
Subcommittee of the American Library Association International
Relations Committee.
Chaired by D. Whitney Coe and Charlotte Kim, the four
speakers and the topics presented are as follows:
- Dr. Yeon-Kyoung Chung, Assistant Professor, Ehwa Women's
University
TOPIC: Library
Education - It's History in Korea since 1950 and it' s future
development
- Mr. Yong Kyu Choo, Head of Korean Division, East Asiatic
Library, UCBerkeley
TOPIC:
Collection Management in the Korean Context
- Mr. Moo-Jae Pak, Senior CJK Conversion Specialist, OCLC
TOPIC:
Current Developments in Library Automation and their Impacts
on Korean
Librarianship
- Ms. Yong Won Kim, Associate Professor, Surugadai University
TOPIC: Information Policy and Information Service
in Korea
After the conference, there was an reception with authentic
Korean food provided by the generous donations from the Consulate
General of Korea in San Francisco, OCLC, EBSCO Publishing, Ingram
Library Services, Chong No Book Center, Dong-A Book Plaza, Jeong
Eum Sa Korean Book Center, and Spring Water Book Import, Inc.
The conference was truly the first of its kind to exchange
information on library education, collection management, library
automation and information policies between the librarians in
the United States and Korea. We appreciate the conference
committee members for their tremendous efforts in making the
conference a success.

News From the Pio Pico/Koreatown Branch of
the Los Angeles Public Library
- Jae Min Roh, Senior Librarian recovered from illness and
started working healthily from October, 1997.
- Jae Min Roh, Senior Librarian and Miki Lim, Young Adult
Librarian attended Task Force Meeting on Developing Recommendations
for Providing Effective Library Services to Asian Language Speakers
sponsored by the California State Library in February and March,
1998. The Task Force will develop the guidelines to provide
better services to Asian language speakers.
- Keumsook Hahn who was a Young Adult Librarian at Cypress
Park Public Library has been transferred to Adult Librarian at
Pio Pico Koreatown Public Library in September, 1997.

News from the Korean Heritage
Library at the University of Southern California
Heh Young Baek, who has worked as a Korean language cataloger
since 1995 resigned in summer of 1997 to move to Michigan with
her family. She is currently a happy, full time homemaker.
Her husband started a brand new Korean church in Grand Rapids,
Michigan. Her new address is: 5365 Wing Ave., S.E., Kentwood,

- A search is currently underway at the Korean Heritage Library,
USC for the vacancy created by Heh Young Baek's departure.

Jay Han came to work as Libary Assistant IV (a grant position)
in Aug. 1997 for Korean language cataloging. He graduated
from UCSD with a B.S. degree in biology.
USC Korean Heritage Library hosted the following visiting
librarians from Korea:
- Ms. Han Kun Song, Korean Assembly Library, July 1997 - May
1998
- Mr. Yong Pyo Hong, Hanyang University Library, Sept. 1997
- Feb. 1998
Joy Kim, Curator of the Korean Heritage Library had the following
presentations and publications:
- "Electronic Resources in Korean Studies" a presentation
at the Western Conference of Association for Asian Studies, Boulder,
Colorado, October 1997.
- "Korean Studies Resources on the World Wide Web"
a presentation at the Council on East Asian Libraries, Washington
D.C., March 1998.
- "A Practical Guide to Electronic Resources in Korean
Studies for Smaller Korean Collections" published in the
Spring 98 issue of Journal of East Asian Libraries.
- "Twelve Most Desired Databases by Korean Studies Librarians"
compiled and recommended to OCLC for loading in the First Search
database.
KBS Video Collection at USC
- The KBS Video Collection will be established at USC Korean
Heritage Library with the donation of 1000 videos from the Korean
Broadcasting System (KBS). These videos, selected from
the finest KBS productions will cover a wide range of subjects
with English subtitles. The collection will also include
the most popular serialized drama as well as the locally produced
documentaries on Korean Americans by the Korean Television Enterprises
(KTE), a Los Angeles-based subsidiary of KBS. These videos
will be cataloged and made available to all U.S. scholars.
