NEW OFFICERS FOR 1999/2000

Choonhee Rhim was unanimously elected as KALA President for the year 1999/2000 at the general meeting on January 18, 1999. Ms. Rhim works as a reference/cataloging librarian at East Los Angeles College Library. She is also the chair of the membership committee and has published the KALA Member Directory for the last several years.
Welcome aboard, Ms. Rhim. We look forward to your leadership.

37TH Annual Korean Library Association Conference

The 37th Annual Korean Library Association Conference will be held in Kwangju, Korea from Sept. 16-18, 1999. Joy Kim, curator of the Korean Heritage Library at the University Southern California is one of the speakers at the Overseas Korean Librarians Roundtable. The title of her presentation is: "Korean Studies Librarianship in the United States: Current Status, Rewards, Challenges and Future Direction". In addition, Hyokyoung Lee, Korean Studies Librarian at C.V. Starr East Asian Library at Columbia University will present the paper with the title: The Korean Collections Consortium of North America: Past, Present and Future.

Report from the President of the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA)

Soon Jung, President of the APALA reported that the American Library Association invited 150 delegates to the Congress on Professional Education in Washington D.C. on April 30 and May 1, 1999. The Congress focused on three areas: higher education, library and information studies, and the profession. In response to Mr. Kenneth Haycock, Chair of the Steering Committee, APALA would like to state that the future of librarianship is of profound importance to Asian Pacific Americans across a continuum of concerns, from recruitment to job opportunity and career development to advancement. APALA looks forward to participating in the Congress and contributing to future activities.

Member News

Moon Jung Chang, librarian of the National Assembly Library in Seoul, Korea, is a visiting librarian at the Korean Heritage Library of University of Southern California. His one-year term as a visiting librarian will end at the end of September, 1999.

Keumsook Hahn, formerly young adult librarian at Pio Pico Koreatown Public Library, has transferred to the International Languages Department of Central Library of the Los Angeles Public Library System.

Suzine Har-Nicolescu, chief librarian at Medgar Evers College/CUNY Library was invited by the National Center of Science Information Systems to present a paper on multiculturalism in a forum in Tokyo, Japan on the study of international sharing of Japanese scholarly information. Her ten-day visit in early March of this year included a speech given at the University of Kyoto. Her paper, entitled, "Reaching Out to the Multicultural World: IFLA and Librarians as Agents of Change" described multiculturalism from a geographical perceptive: worldwide (IFLA), national (ALA) and local (New York City)

Charlotte (Chung-Sook) Kim, assistant commissioner of Neighborhood Services, was featured in the Korea Times May 23, 1998 issue for her several awards. She received the
"Outstanding Achievement Award" in community leadership from YWCA Metropolitan Chicago. The State Secretary of Illinois, George Ryan, also chose her as the Outstanding Asian American Librarian in celebration of Asian American Heritage Month for the State. In addition, she was one of five recipients of the Outstanding Community Service Award for the Korean community given by Mayor Richard M. Daley on September 22, 1998. This was the sixth annual celebration of Korean Chusok (Korean Thanksgiving) sponsored by Mayor Daley. On October 15, 1998, she was one of six women presented with an Outstanding Chicago Woman Award at the 27th YWCA Leader Luncheon. In July of this year, Today's Chicago Woman, published by Sherren Leigh, announced that Ms. Kim is one of 100 women making a difference for the City of Chicago.

Joy Kim, curator of the Korean Heritage Library of University of Southern California was elected as Chair of the Committee on Korean Materials for the Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL) for Asian Studies. She was also elected as Korean Officer of the OCLC CJK Users Group.

Sun Yoon Lee will be the new Korean studies librarian at the Korean Heritage Library of University of Southern California. She graduated from Yonsei University in Korea majoring in library science and has her Master's degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in library and information science at the University of Texas at Austin. She has many publications to her credit and has expert knowledge in metadata, bibliometrics, cataloging, and information technology. She and her two children moved to California in August and her first day at USC will be October 1, 1999.

Unjoo H. Lee has transferred to the Cataloging Department of the County of Los Angeles Public Library. She was formerly a Children's Librarian at the Hacienda Heights branch of the County of Los Angeles Public Library.

Youngsil Lee was promoted to be Branch Manager of Kaufman Brentwood Public Library of the Los Angeles Public Library System. She was a reference librarian in the Business/Economics Department of the Central Library of the Los Angeles Public Library System.

Miki Lim was also promoted to be Branch Manager of Pio Pico Koreatown Public Library of the Los Angeles Public Library System. She was formerly the Young Adult Librarian at the same branch. She successfully completed her term as the President of the KALA in 1997/98.

Ed Pai completed a Ph.D. in Information Science at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, UCLA in June, 1999. He continues to teach as an adjunct professor at the School of Library and Information Science, San Jose State University, Southern California Campus. He helped design the KALA homepage in collaboration with Choonhee Rhim, President of the KALA and many other members.

Jae Min Roh, who was the Branch Manager of Pio Pico Koreatown Public Library retired on April 21, 1999 after 27 years of service to Los Angeles Public Library System, 15 of which were spent as Branch Manager of Pio Pico Koreatown Library. He was one of the founding members of the KALA and contributed tremendously to the Association. He also worked hard to promote library services in the Korean community in Los Angeles area organizing Book Reading Contest and many other library-related activities for the community. Congratulations in your retirement, and many thanks for all your efforts to improve library service!
